Mike Brooks is a radio talk show host with Cumulus Media, WYAY, The New Talk 106.7 in Atlanta, GA.. Prior to that he served as the on-air law enforcement and public safety analyst for CNN, HLN and IN SESSION on Tru TV, all part of Turner Broadcasting. He is a freelance journalist/analyst and security and law enforcement consultant for police and fire departments, government agencies and the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University.
Brooks served 26 years with Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, retiring in 1999 as a Detective with the Intelligence Division. During his tenure he was assigned to both the Special Operations Division (SOD) and the Metropolitan Police Emergency Response Team (ERT) where he helped develop the department’s hostage negotiation and hate crimes programs. For the last six years of his service, he represented the department on the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) in the Washington Field Office, responding to and investigating terrorist bombings and suspected acts of terrorism worldwide including: Khobar Towers in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, Olympic Centennial Park in Atlanta, GA, Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, and the crash TWA Flight 800 off the coast of Long Island, NY.
While assigned to the ERT, Brooks, a nationally certified crisis intervener, received the D.C. City Council’s Proclamation for Heroism for a 1985 situation involving a barricaded subject shooting at police and the public. He has also received more than 170 other commendations from law enforcement officials, prosecutors and citizens. He has served as an instructor and lecturer at George Washington University, American University, FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, U.S. Capitol Police and the Department of Justice, among others.
While serving with the Metropolitan Police Department, Brooks was also an Assistant Volunteer Fire Chief and EMT in Fairfax County, Virginia, with expertise in fire suppression, hazardous materials and structural collapse, as well as heavy, ice and swift-water rescue.
After retiring from the Metropolitan Police Department, Brooks worked as a Senior Instructor in counter-terrorism with the Security Specialties Division of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia, and as the General Manager of Delta Airline’s abusive passenger and workplace violence programs for its Corporate Security Department.
In June 2001 Brooks joined CNN as a terrorism and law enforcement analyst and was part of the CNN teams that covered the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. Brooks was part of the CNN Investigation Team that won a 1st place National Headliner Award for Continuing Coverage-Attack on America & Their Aftermath. Later, Brooks was a National Correspondent for CNN. He also served as a substitute anchor and regular law enforcement analyst for HLN’s Nancy Grace, Prime News and The Glenn Beck Show.
Brooks also has extensive radio broadcast experience including acting as guest host at AM1500 KSTP in Minneapolis, MN. He has been a guest contributor on 790 The Zone, 92.9 The Game, Rock 100.5 and has been a regular on The Sully Show on Talk Radio 640 WGST, all here in Atlanta.
